Prejudice:
By Lauren Ditmars
I initially created this piece with the purpose of highlighting the contrast between light and dark in multiple senses of the term. As I drew the sketch- developing it into a usable guide, I started to create a story in my head. The girl in the tree was a mercenary- probably hired in a tavern by people with too much hate and not enough work to do. They hired her to kill the strange girl who lived in a remote forest in a grove of bamboo; someone she probably had never known before. The girl in the water lived on her own in a secluded area to escape the prejudice of her times. I didn’t portray the prejudice right out through the use of skin colour or any other factor due to the fact that I wasn’t arguing a point but instead a concept. I used the shading to try and zero in on the innocence of the girl and the dark nature of the mercenary girl as well as the attire of the flowery purple dress versus the dark, high contrast garb of the mercenary. The foggy background alludes to the remoteness and adds mystery to the whole story while highlighting a moment that coveys the ugliness humanity can be capable of.
